Kelly Rossiter is the most willful of Bob Rossiter’s five children. This time she has gone against her father’s wishes and applied for the Women’s Air Service Pilots (WASP) program. Upon discovering that her father had opened her telegram of acceptance, Kelly storms out of his office in a fit of pique. In the process she runs into, then manages to insult, Army Air Force Lieutenant-Colonel Kirk Singleton who is visiting her father’s company, a subcontractor of Boeing Aircraft, on business. It quickly becomes apparent that they are mutually attracted to each other despite their initial confrontation. Their developing relationship provides a romantic thread that runs the length of the novel but the primary focus of the story is on Kelly’s drive to carve out a meaningful role for herself in a male-dominated career field. The novel begins with an incident that occurs several weeks after Kelly graduates from the WASP pilot training program. She is sitting by herself in the Long Beach Army Air Force Officers club when Lieutenant Maynard Magnuson, a young, slightly inebriated, fighter pilot sits down at her table and proceeds to make disparaging cracks about the piloting ability of women and tops it off with a cruel comment about the WASP pilots who were killed in aircraft accidents. Kelly, whose best friend was killed due to an irresponsible act by a fighter pilot, attacks and tries to strangle Magnuson. Kirk pulls her off Magnuson and Kelly then challenges the fighter pilot to a mock dogfight to take place the following morning to determine who is the better pilot. The story focuses on Kelly's flying adventures as well as her ongoing problem with male pilots who resent having to compete with women trained to fly military aircraft. Kirk Singleton at first encourages her pursuit of a flying career but, as time goes on, seeks to discourage her from pursuing a test pilot's career. <b REVIEWS “In the feisty, utterly charming character of Kelly Rossiter, Brandriff not only introduces his readers to the will, courage, and staggering achievements of a WW2-era Women Air Service Pilot (WASP), but also to the cultural, personal, and political challenges she must conquer in order to stay in the sky. Born to Soar is a memorable, finely wrought first novel by an author in steady control of both storyline and aeronautical detail.” -- Chandra Prasad, author of Breathe the Sky A Novel Inspired by the Life of Amelia Earhart “Welles Brandriff has written an engaging portrait of a heroic and passionate WASP pilot in an era when women at the controls of an aircraft faced frequent and hurtful prejudices in a male-dominated world. The flying scenes show Brandriff’s strong grasp of aviation and experience with the great aircraft of the World War II era. Reading about the problems with the B-29 was an education in itself. When the book’s powerhouse heroine, Kelly Rossiter, takes off, the reader rides in the cockpit with her.” -- Marc Wortman, author of The Millionaire Unit The Aristocratic Flyboys Who Fought the Great War and Invented American Air Power “The way she [Kelly Rossiter] courageously and skillfully handles herself in adventures great and small, as a pilot and woman, spunky, outspoken and independent brings the story to life. You can almost smell the sweat and leather, taste the sweetness of green fields below her open cockpit and feel her gut tighten in tense situations. Speaking as a pilot and flight instructor, the descriptions of aerial scenes are right on the mark, with none of the usual half-notes that mar so many otherwise excellent stories about flying.” -- Jerry Painter, Chief Pilot for Wild Blue Aviation Born to Soar, a novel by Welles Brandriff, is an exciting story which does a superb job of evoking the spirit of the WASP pilots whose contribution to the war effort has only recently been given the recognition they deserve. Kelly Rossiter is one tough lady. She also happens to be one of the best American pilots in World War II, man or woman. In the first chapter of this vividly rendered novel, Kelly gets in a barroom brawl with a lieutenant who thinks female pilots are merely "cluttering up the sky." From that point on, we know we're in for a wild ride. Kelly flies with the WASPS, the Women Air Service Pilots, but with the help of her father, who owns an aeronautics company, her high-ranking boyfriend Kirk Singleton, and a few other military men who acknowledge her talent, she manages a number of hair-raising missions beyond the scope of what most of her WASP colleagues are allowed. If this author isn't a pilot himself, he's done some incredible research. The flying passages are full of rich detail and downright thrilling. This novel shines a spotlight on an underreported slice of World War II history.Product details

Born to Soar eBook Welles Brandriff Reviews
Born to Soar is a meticulously researched first novel about some of the brave women who volunteered to serve in the Women's Air Service Pilots (WASP) program during World War II. The author describes well the prejudices and hurdles these women had to overcome to be accepted in their role as pilots, an occupation that previously been almost always been filled by men. The text is never preachy, however, with good dialogue and action scenes. The in-flight scenes, especially with aircraft that were new at the time, such as the B-29 bomber, were especially engaging. I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.
The author allowed me to read his manuscript right before publication. What a treat! For those interested in aviation, WW2, or pioneering women, this is the book for you. In the feisty, utterly charming character of Kelly Fagan, Brandriff not only introduces his readers to the will, courage, and staggering achievements of a WW2-era Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP), but also to the cultural, personal, and political challenges she must conquer in order to stay in the sky. Born to Soar is a memorable, finely wrought first novel by an author in steady control of both storyline and aeronautical detail.

I was fortunate enough to have met Welles & his beautiful wife, Maria, at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, CT. We were waiting for the elevator to the theater when I noticed an older gentleman who needed some assistance. I was happy to lend a hand. From there, a great friendship was born. I was thrilled to learn that he was an author because I was a great lover of books. He asked if I would be interested in reading his story if he sent it to me electronically and I quickly agreed. My great-aunt, who was with me that night, had been an aircraft mechanic during WW2 snd I had always found her stories fascinating. I knew she would love the book as much as I did.
The book was engaging and real, just like the author. It was easy to get swept up into the story & the characters, but it was the era that drew me into the story. An era I knew well due to the stories told by my great-grandfather when I was a small child. He would regalle us with stories of the wars & the advancements in technology since his birth in 1881. He was fascinated by the planes, cars, ships, & spaceships. My great-grandfather's enthusiasm for story-telling was once again alive in this book by a man I had just met! Welles Brandriff's story filled a void I had since the death of my beloved great-grandfather. To make it even more meaningful, I am very close to my great-aunt, the youngest daughter of my great-grandfather, who was 86-years-old at the time we met the author and his wife. If you love history or adventure, or maybe just a great love story, this story will deliver. Hats off to Mr. Brandriff for his love of storytelling & his historical accuracy. I'm looking forward to sharing this story with my great-aunt and anxiously anticipating another book from him!
Just finished the book, what a wonderful story. I really enjoyed the History included in the story. I recommend this book. Hope you continue to write these kind of stories. Thank you for a great book.
Not being a WWII buff nor a fly-boy, I am hooked with this book! The feeling of technical authenticity has me convinced that Kelly experienced all the grief, strength and flexibility of a true USAF warrior. It's fairly easy to dismiss the minorities of that era, namely sex and race, but the author bravely handles one extremely well, even touching on an Asian bias. This is a 'good read' and leaves one with the feeling I was there! What next?
From the moment the Glenn Miller Band comes out of the Jute Box, until the last page; The author's characters, and the real life characters, spring into action, making it difficult to put the book down. It is interwoven with an accurate Historic Base, and an American story long over due. Like the Tuskegee Airmen, The Woman's Air Service Pilots of WW II never received the enourmous appreciation & credit they earned & deserved, for serving their country. Welles is a natural born writer who brings it all to life most skillfully. Born To Soar is a Movie Must waiting to happen.
