Some crimes are too horrible to forget, and some just keep happening over and over again. In a town where a frontier military fort was once converted to an orphanage for destitute children, dark deeds took place. The children placed there were often taunted, jeered at and farmed out to local businesses as free labor to ‘help pay for their keep’. On occasion bad things happened, and if you were a shy, pretty girl, even worse things happened, unforgivable things that might take a very long while to get over. Maybe even a few lifetimes, as the people who come together to solve the town’s mysteries discover.

"Black Night" is one of those books that would ultimately qualify as a guilty pleasure. Ms. Strayhorn's prose reflects a little of the Harlequin romances, with a little "soft" sex thrown in for fun. And the book is fun. I read it in one day, as it is a very easy read. The plot revolves around a woman and her daughter who return to the Mom's hometown to help her vanquish the "ghosts" that have haunted her. Mom was in a very nasty orphanage when she was young, and ever since she's been haunted by memories of that horrible place. Daughter Lena falls for the ex-con next door. Their repartee throughout the book is at times hilarious and then even touching. Lena is a pain in the ... for the first half of the book; Rafael (the ex-con) is a real sex-maniac in some ways, but once you get to know him a little better, one can almost understand his immediate lust for Lena. Eugenia starts having more visions of the past, which focus on a despicable wife of a Civil War something or other, and how she manages to get him to kill his sweetheart. Also in the picture is Ross Schweig, who gives both Lena and Rafael jobs at his sandwich shop; and Lorraine Lake, his bitchy girlfriend who has a demented son. All these characters do have something to do with what happened in the past, and it's fun guessing how it will all turn out.Strayhorn keeps the plot moving, and the dialogue, though derivative, is fun. I liked this.

This book is so good, its about a lady and her daughter who switch houses with a family in fort grant and they get the house right beside a ex-con, whos very sexy and so is his name...Rafael. I mostly liked the parts about Lena (the daughter) and Rafael because Lena is so mean to him at first and they fall in love and all this stuff. But also wrapped into the story is Lena's moms troubles with fort grant where she stayed in a childrens home as a child..which is now haunted...but overall its a great book rather you like suspense...romance...or mystery...if youve never read it go check it out or buy it here )!
